One day Coyote was out walking across the prairie. Some crows had been following him for most of the day, cawing insults, and had just gotten tired and flown away to the north where Coyote had been coming from. Coyote hardly had time to enjoy the quiet when he heard something just over the next rise to the south. Being Coyote, he thought he’d just sneak up and see what it was, just in case it might be something good to eat. While Coyote wasn’t hungry just then, he thought it would be too bad if he passed up something good. So he slunk up the little rise of land, and when he got close to the top he dropped down on his belly and wriggled the rest of the way up to some sagebrush. Only his eyes and ears and his sharp nose were showing.
